Form 287 is used to change the registered office of a UK company.
The rules governing the location of the address state that on incorporation it must be in England, Wales or Scotland. Northern Ireland is not accepted as a valid position for a statutory residence for a UK based company.
Once the registration of the company is complete and at any stage in the future, Form 287 can be used to move the address from one location to another.
The change of situation does have some limitations however and require the new address to be in the same country which was used for the original company formation.
For example, if a company is incorporated and has its registered office was in England, it can not, at a later date use Form 287 to change the address to one in Scotland and thus become a Scottish company by doing so.
The completion of Form 287 can either be done online via an electronic submission system or using the Companies House PDF document.
The address of the new registered office is entered and the document is signed by a director or company secretary. The old location will still be valid for a period of two weeks following acceptance from Companies House.
