Using an Ampersand (&) in a Company Name

 

Ampersand and Company Formation Systems

When forming a UK company with a name which uses an ampersand&” instead of the word "and", some formation systems can have a problem.

For example, when registering a company in the name of "Incorporation and Setup Limited", electronic formation name searches would display the name as available (at least until someone reads this articles and chooses to register it).

Some Company Name Searches Can Not Cope with the "&" Character

If, instead of the word "and" the ampersand was used to make “Incorporation & setup Limited”, some name searches would not be able to read past the “&” and would effectively truncate the name. They would then actually submit the words “incorporation limited” to the Companies House name search database.

The results would display that the company name “incorporate Limited” was already registered. A certain level of frustration might build at this point as the person checks that they have typed their proposed name correctly and resubmits it only to receive the same results.
